New Zealand Day 1: Christchurch

We arrived into Christchurch in the early afternoon and headed straight to the campervan hiring company. All in all, the process of getting the van must have taken us about an hour and a half – it was very frustrating! We had been told that there would be no extra charge for us both to drive, that duvets and linen were included in the price, and various other things which turned out to be untrue. In typical Owen-family style, Dave had come prepared with the flyer which had told us all of this information, and his complaining hat, and managed to get it us all for free.

We were on the road by about 5:30pm – the long journey of about 15 minutes to our first campsite in Christchurch. As soon as we arrived we unpacked and sorted out the van that was to be home for the next two and a half weeks. With the bed put out ready for sleep-time, we found a nice Indian restaurant for dinner (the first in about 10 months – Sydney has no nice curry houses) and did a bit of food shopping for the first breakfast in the van the next morning.

A slightly restless sleep followed, but at least it was nice and toasty with the heater on – my fear of being cold the whole holiday had eased somewhat!
